Make sure you study also the CAGED system
Forget the notes for a moment, just look at the intervals. The layout moves up and down the neck based on your root note of the chord you want to play.
See : finding root notes all over the neck.
you can see when the root note is on the E string you have a G shape to the left and an E shape to the right
When the root note is on the A string you have a C shape to the left and A shape to the right
When the root note is on the D string you have the E shape on the left and the D shape on the right.
I use the picture below to create/construct any chord by making use of Chord formulas. (Premium membership)
eg. R-3-5-b7-#9

Any chord can easily be constructed, going from major, minor chords upto 6/b9, diminished, augmented, 9, 11, 13, etc ....
Important !! from the moment we add a dominant 7 (b7) in the chord, eg. the numbers 2, 4, etc... get incremented by 7 so you get 9, 11, etc...
eg. an example of a 9 chord for the C or A shape (R-3-5-b7-9) based on the first image.
results in this chord : (C9 in this example, because the root note on the 5th string on fret 3 is a C)
